Learn more about BTT

History of our organization, BTT

Founded by Ms. Dawn Simmons, MSW, Brighter Tomorrows Today, Inc. (“BTT”) is a US 501c3 charitable nonprofit that assists rural and economically depressed communities in the US and Ghana. BTT provides charitable services, by partnering with individuals and organizations to provide clean drinking water and school supplies; as well as offering in-house programs such as English Language, Basic Computer Literacy, professional etiquette skills and a youth soccer program.

The organization started in November 2000, in Nkenkaasu, when Dawn Simmons, the founder, came from the US to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. She created an informal English school with 60-80 children and 3 teachers and purchased land to have a community program. In 2011, the organization, BTT, was officially established and in 2021, the school building was completed and open for classes with 30+ students, currently 86 students, and continues to grow. Students pay GHS 15/month ($1.03) for classes, which does not cover basic monthly expenses, which is approximately GHS 9,800 per month / USD$ 700 per month.

BTT has partnerships with organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., The Nkenkaasu Royals, Africa STEM Academy and the Bergen County (NJ) Chapter of The Links, Inc. (“The Links”). Thanks to The Links' ITS program, they donated a borehole to a Nkenkaasu School serving 664+ students in 2023. And beginning September 2023, BTT is participating in the “Ghana-US Digifriends Program” created by the Links, a year-long, virtual web (pen pal) exchange program via Zoom that meets monthly. Currently, in 2025, there are 18 students enrolled, nine (9) BTT students and nine (9) US Students (a Girl Scouts of America Troop).

We are also forming partnerships with the Girl Scouts of Connecticut, USA and the Ghana Girl Guides, which have been an excellent for girl empowerment programs.

Two Signature Programs of BTT is "BTT/Kicking It Ghana", which is a partnership with Kicking It, USA, a program where they support teams for children in the rural towns throughout the world, created in 2021 by the Gardner sons (ages 8 and 11 years old at the time) of New York City.  They have supported BTT since 2021. Our newest venue is the "Doll Like Me" Program, which was created by the African Stem Academy, Moe Cheetham, Founder, where we ask people donate black baby dolls to the girls in Ghana. Dolls that look like them and have Program focusing on Empowerment and giving the dolls to the children.
